The Northwest and Piney Hills LMG Programs will serve as joint hosts for this years Louisiana Master Gardener State Conference scheduled for October 8-11 at Sam’s Town on the Riverfront in Shreveport, Louisiana.  In addition to outstanding speakers, tours, vendors, prizes, and great accommodations, the annual Red River Revel will be in full swing as a special highlight for all participants to enjoy during the conference.

The 2013 State Conference Committee is finalizing plans for registration to begin in late April which will be posted on the  LMG webage at http://www.lsuagcenter/mastergardener . Stay tuned for more information and plan on experiencing a fun-filled, educational and exciting Louisiana Master Gardener State Conference in 2013!

The LSU AgCenter is pleased to extend a special invitation to Master Gardeners statewide to attend the 2013 “Louisiana Master Gardener Appeciation Day” scheduled for May 10th at the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Dr. Regina Bracey, Station Coordinator for the Hammond Research facility and Lead Horticulture Research Specialist Dr. Allen Owings welcomes all Louisiana Master Gardeners to come spend a day in the beautiful gardens at the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station located in Hammond, Louisiana. The Appreciation Day program will include guided tours of the various research gardens, a scavenger plant hunt, question and answer sessions with LSU AgCenter specialists along with a complimentary lunch and lots of great door prizes!

Volunteers planning to attend are asked to please register their name by contacting their parish LMG coordinators no later than May 1st. If overnight lodging is an interest, this site http://tangi-cvb.org/site3.php  provides a listing of hotels including Bed & Breakfast Inns throughout the Hammond area.

Dr. Allan Armitage, distinguished educator, author, speaker and researcher has a new on-line  course designed for home garden enthusiasts, Master Gardeners and other green industry professionals.

Titled “Armitage’s Herbaceous Perennials for the Sun” the course is a self-paced, self-study online certificate program authored by Dr. Allan Armitage, one of the world’s leading experts on and researchers of perennials.   The on-line course provides instruction on the characteristics, propagation methods and optimal growing conditions of 20 species of sun perennials which centers on Dr. Armitage’s textbook, Herbaceous Perennial Plants: A Treatise on their Identification, Culture, and Garden Attributes. Other resources include online access to the professor’s audio clips describing each plant’s history, propagation, flower structure, identifying characteristics, and pros and cons. Participants can assess their knowledge through self-tests, interactive exercises, and end-of-lesson quizzes that provide instant feedback.

Regular fee for participation in Dr.Armitage’s Herbaceous Perennials for the Sun on-line course is $249 however the course is offered to Louisiana Master Gardeners for $149.

Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans along with specialist from the LSU AgCenter will host a Spring  Symposium titled “Urban Farming: Natural Food From Your Garden to Your Table”.  The 2013 Symposium will be held 9 A.M to 12 noon on four separate dates that include Wednesday, March 13; Saturday, March 16; Wednesday, March 27; and Saturday, March 30.

LSU AgCenter experts Dr. Carl Motsenbocker, Dr. Katherine Fontenot and Louisiana’s Plant Doctor Dan Gill along with Greater New Orleans Master Gardeners and local urban farmers will present instructional tips on a variety of vegetable gardening subject matter involving composting, soil preparation, rain water containment, raised beds, in-ground planting, container gardening, selecting and planting warm season vegetables and herbs, nutrition and more.
