The New Orleans Spring Garden Show, scheduled for April 6 & 7 from 10 AM to 5 PM at the New Orleans Botanical Gardens in City Park, will feature a variety of activities to be enjoyed by the home gardener and the professional. In addition to a variety of exhibits, music, a kids discovery area, arts & crafts and plant & products sales, a total of 6 of gardening education programs will be conducted.

Eductional programs on Saturday will include:  11:30 AM to 12:30 PM “Summer Flowering Vines” by Dan Gill of the LSU AgCenter; 1:00 to 2:00 PM “Louisiana Irises” by Patrick O’Connor of Zydeco Irises and Louisiana Iris Society; 2:30 to 3:30 PM “Common Diseases of the Home Vegetable Garden” by Andrew Loyd of the LSU AgCenter.

Educational programs on Sunday will include: 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM “Louisiana Super Plants” by Dr. Regina Bracey of the LSU AgCenter; 1:00 to 2:00 PM “The Cottage Garden” by Tammany Baumgarden of the New Orleans Master Gardener Association; 2:30 to 3:30 PM “The Natural, Edible Garden” by Amber Parker of the New Orleans Master Gardener Association.

The “Plant Doctor” Nick Singh from the LSU AgCenter Plant Diagnostic Center also will be on hand to answer questions about plant disease and insect and weed problems.

Individuals with an interest in native plants may want to join the outdoor walks, workshops and other sessions that will be part of the 2013 Cullowhee Native Plant Conference scheduled for July 17 – 20 in Cullowhee, North Carolina. The Cullowhee Conference is dedicated to the advancement of research, knowledge and sustainable practices in native plant landscaping and attracts annually a diverse group of professionals, gardeners and students.

The conference is held at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina located between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains, approximately fifty miles west of Asheville. Close to both the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cullowhee is in an ideal location for anyone with an interest in nature. A free webinar, set for Friday, April 5 will discuss how to keep fire ants away from places such as vegetable gardens and bodies of water.  Willie Datcher, a regional home grounds agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, will host the free webinar set for 1 p.m. Central Daylight time.

Along with Datcher will be Extension experts, Vicky Bertagnolli, an Extension Agent and Master Gardener Coordinator with Clemson University, and Dr. Bastiaan Drees, a Professor of Entomology with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Bertagnolli will discuss fire ant control in vegetable gardens, compost piles and around bodies of water. Drees will discuss how to keep fire ants out of electrical equipment.

A tour of three area gardens will be held in Ruston Saturday, April 27, 2013, 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., sponsored by The Ruston Garden Club. Residential gardens will be featured, including the 2005 Southern Living Idea Home.  Vendors with handcrafted garden art and accessories and a plant sale hosted by the North Central Louisiana Master Gardeners will be added attractions.  Cost is $10 for all three gardens.

Tickets will be available at each garden the day of the tour.  Advance tickets may be purchased at the Ruston Lincoln Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau (2111 North Trenton), Twin Oaks Nursery (630 East Georgia Street), and Townsend House Gifts (410 North Bonner Street).
